At just four years old, I was zipping around Indiana, blissfully unaware that life was about to take a turn, packing up and heading down to Memphis for the next chapter.

All my brothers tried to claim Blackie as their own, but he was MY dog—no contest. We each had a puppy from the same litter, but Blackie and I shared a bond like no other. Just like me, he was a fighter, the only one to stick around while his siblings met an early demise.

I officially became a pop!


Charles Moritz Pitts Apple was still cooking in the womb when Winnsie and I loaded up the station wagon and drove from NY to Charlotte -- a city I’d only read about in an article. It was touted as the next big thing, full of promise and potential. We had no job lined up, no home waiting for us—just a destination

Armed with a bit of charm, a strong interest in science, and a background in lab work, I managed to talk my way into a solid role as a rep in the medical supply industry.

I met Susan while...

We embarked on the ambitious journey of renovating a sprawling Victorian house in Mooresville, NC. The home once belonged to Dr. [BLANK], whose rich history deeply moved me. Inspired by his story, I felt a strong desire to restore the house to a semblance of its former glory.

 in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood was a former boarding house, famously known as the place where Carson McCullers wrote The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. At the time, the area wasn’t much to look at. After transforming the boarding house, it became home to several high-end restaurants, the most successful being its current tenant, Copper.
